The Story Behind the Story

There’s always a story behind a story. In this case, it started with a weekend trip to an island in Indonesia…

Actually, it started before then. Like many people (I soon discovered), I have had the  desire to develop something unique, aesthetically attractive and commercially sustainable.

With the enthusiastic recommendation from a good friend, I visited an island location a short flight from Jakarta where I live. With relatively low expectations, I was surprised by what I saw. Truly clear water, fine white sand, dramatic granite boulders and a safe, quality road system around the island. What was particularly surprising was the lack of resort choices.

After a series of communications with a land owner of two beachfront properties, we struck a deal to develop a 2 hectare beachfront property. We shared a vision of developing something authentically ‘eco friendly’ and unique to the usual holiday destinations spread out through Indonesia.

Solar Tents

An interesting concept. A tent developed by a mobile company (Orange) using design company (Kaleidoscope), it uses ‘photovoltaic fabric’ to produce energy (from solar) to provide electricity and wifi.  More info here.

Let us know what you think. Would it fit in with our concept in the tropics?

The Concept

A low density, simple, yet detail focused resort where our operations maximise sound environmental and community initiatives (see future post).  We considered developing villas but we felt that at this stage they wouldn’t be the best choice. We also considered purchasing traditional wooden homes on the island and refurbishing them. However, the upkeep, comfort and longevity of the structures were questionable. So the choice we have come up with are graphically depicted below.

Sea Turtle Sanctuary

Sea Turtles have a unique place in the hearts of many scuba divers, snorkelers and children of all ages. Our location has had an active sea turtle population (along with dolphins and other marine life), however there has been an increase in sea turtle eggs being sold at local markets which has been reducing their population.

We hope to divert that means of commerce via arrangements with local fisherman and a sea turtle sanctuary that will reside just off our beach front. We feel it will be  an attractive feature for our guests and particular the younger ones who can see turtles up close.

What’s a good name for a resort?

What’s in a name? I figure a lot and I’m fresh out of good ideas.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know. In addition to my gratitude, I’ll make sure you get the following (if your name is chosen):

  • 3 x free nights of accommodation each year for 3 years
  • one of our villas/cottages being named in your honour

Got an idea? Why not suggest it below in the ‘leave a reply/comment’ section.
